Dorothy Mensah and Krista Pottinger are two best friends turned fashion designers from Northeastern who have turned a passion into a career. Their brand, L.O.R., has been successful enough to show at Plitzs New York City Fashion Week, as well as gain a wide following on Instagram. L.O.R’s line is focused on boldness: bold cuts, colors, prints, and is working on leaving a bold impression on the fashion industry as well.

After bleak and frigid New England winters, Northeastern’s campus receives a facelift each year. When spring arrives, landscaping crews take to the areas on campus, planting flowers and laying new mulch – as much a sign of spring on campus as the impending final exams.

“Landscaping is key in showcasing the beauty of Northeastern’s unique urban campus, and the grounds crew is committed to landscaping solutions that meet the twin goals of careful design and cost-saving maintenance techniques,” university spokeswoman Lucy Warsh said.

Each year around this time, the Northeastern facilities staff begins “spring cleanup,” which involves removal of debris, planting and mulching.

This year, the flora will include pansies, tulips and daffodils, as well as other plants. As for mulch, some will be redistributed on campus, and the grounds crew will also put down new layers.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is a charity organization that supports the arts, specifically of films, television shows, and video games. On February 10th at London’s Royal Opera House, they screened their annual awards ceremony honoring the best films to be shown on British screens.

You ask me if I’ve read The Great Gatsby

as you twirl your Y-shaped martini glass,

as though the last letter of the title

of my favourite book - you know,

the one where a classy fellow with

an unjustified British accent dies

tragically because he gave all

of his life to one dumb thing - will wrap itself

around and tie me to you, making me

your Gatsby.

I have an unfortunate habit of doing that. Trust me,

you’re just as dumb as Daisy

and I’m just as capable of great

love as Gatsby. But I don’t

want to end up face-down in a pool

having lost my ability to be spiny

and having given up my soul to you

for the incredible  bargain of

50,000,000 rupees, which incidentally enough  =

a kiss as the snow lightly falls around our faces +

the way your unshaved chin papercuts me softly +

a crate of clementines +

the way your hands draw bold lines in my sketchbook heart.

And, you know, the drawing was perfect

but you forgot the fixative of actually caring.

Northeastern students, faculty and guests laughed and gave Comedy Central’s Nick Swardson a round of applause every time he cracked a joke. Swardson returned to Northeastern  Jan. 17 in Blackman Auditorium to do stand up after missing his scheduled Homecoming show with Sarah Silverman due to food poisoning.

Due to Swardson’s illness, Silverman performed last October and Swardson’s show was rescheduled.  Those who attended the original show were offered free admission to Swardson’s show in advance.

In a sea of drab, boxy menswear, Alice + Olivia’s fall collection stood out to me like a diamond among the cubic zirconia: classic with a fresh take. The collection’s tone was echoed by cool styling choices such as a double-braid headband, red lips, and a bold cat eye, along with bright jewel-toned bags and shoes and a few quirky glasses.  With the backdrop of a metropolitan subway station, the interesting prints and 20s silhouettes brought an interesting touch of edge, while the ladylike tweed, checkered prints, and tartan brought the pieces back to professional territory. I loved the abstract watercolor men’s button-down, red honeycomb miniskirt, and black and red tribal print top.

My Style in 3 Words:Eclectic. Classic. Comfortable.

As a girl who has to wear red lipstick in order to properly study, I think it’s safe to say I’ve got a pretty distinctive perspective on fashion. I believe everyone should wear clothes that fit, both physically and personality-wise. You’ll never catch me in head-to-toe leopard print, but I definitely admire the confidence it takes to be comfortable in that look. Personally, I like to play with cool textures, unexpected pieces, and trends in a way that I am comfortable with.
